Orchards and gardens in the Islamic Sicily

Orchards and garden in the “Conca d’oro” (Sicily) between IX and XII centuries

Sicily has been between the IX and the XII century under the political and cultural influence of the Islam. In those years the island has been protagonist of an “agrarian revolution” that has modified its agricultural system and the landscape. The great novelty brought by the medieval Arabic agriculture resides in the fact that new farming techniques, new crops, and new social and economic conditions converged in a systemic, modern vision of the field.
